The Breeding Bird Survey\: Past\, Present\, and Future by Becky Whittam. Becky Whittam of the Canadian Wildlife Service will discuss the North American Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) and its relevance to the Maritimes as a tool for monitoring bird populations. Initiated in 1966\, the BBS is North America’s longest running bird monitoring program\, and involves volunteers and professionals from across North America. Becky’s talk will include stories and pictures from Maritime volunteers\, a dedicated and hardy bunch whose work has contributed greatly to our knowledge of bird population change over the last half century. Becky will also discuss both regional and national results of the survey and how these results have informed a variety of conservation initiatives. Plans for future analyses and potential expansion in the Maritimes will also be outlined. The BBS is a cooperative effort between the U.S. Geological Survey's Patuxent Wildlife Research Center and Environment Canada's Canadian Wildlife Service.
The Sheffield Mills Community Hall will host its annual pancake and sausage breakfast with naturalist displays\, films\, crafts\, and art show. A short drive around the area in the morning will usually offer a sight of more than 100 Bald Eagles and many hawks.
