BNS Regular September Meeting: Space to Roost

September 18 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Space to Roost: Working with recreational users to share roosting space with migratory shorebirds at high tide by Jaya Fahey

The Space to Roost project, led by Bird Studies Canada, is currently wrapping up its second field season, working with recreational beach users to share space with migratory shorebirds at the Guzzle and Avonport beaches. Based on site audits and interviews with recreational users last summer, and in consultation with our partners (listed below), we designated one beach at each location a ‘Shorebird Resting Beach,’ asking users to avoid these spaces from two hours before to two hours after high tide. I’m eager to share the results of this conservation strategy with our partners at Blomidon Naturalists Society, and hope to see you all there!

Space to Roost is a collaboration between Bird Studies Canada, Dalhousie University, Blomidon Naturalists Society, NS Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Canada, and Nature Conservancy of Canada.
