HRM City Nature Challenge

April 26 - April 29

Halifax Regional Municipality City Nature Challenge

We’re gearing up for the HRM City Nature Challenge, a fun competition across the world! In 2019, 65 cities, 17 countries, and 5 continents β€” to document the most species.

From April 26 – 29, 2019 we’ll need people to help us take observations (e.g. taking photos with your phone or camera) of as many species as possible to record nature in the Halifax Regional Municipality. All species count! This information will help create a more accurate picture of the HRM area’s biodiversity, both urban and rural and including Sable Island. Any observation of plants, animals, fungi and lichen, in the HRM area made during these days will count for the challenge. Statistics for the challenge include not just the number of observations but also the number of participants and the number of identified species.

Mandate: In an attempt to highlight citizen science as a valuable source of information about the biodiversity observed in our communities a local group has registered our area, the HRM, to compete in the international City Nature Challenge.

The intent of the local organizers is simple –to encourage people to get outdoors exploring, observing nature, sharing observations and having fun.

The platform chosen to share observations of plants and animals is iNaturalist. To view our project page click here:
