EVENTS *December General Meeting - Monday, December 14th @ 7:30pm *(poster attached) Omar Bhimji, the Town of Wolfville's Climate Change Mitigation Coordinator, will give a presentation about the Town's emissions reduction work. The presentation will cover the history of climate action in Wolfville, the recent developments that reinvigorated the Town's efforts, what has been accomplished over the past 18 months, and what is planned for the future. To join the meeting, you must register through zoom here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMrcumsqjktEteWlm_BN6cQImi9iECeJ3pQ After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. *HWA Webinar - Thursday, December 3rd @ 1pm *(poster attached) While this webinar will look at Hemlock Woolly Adelgid in the Eastern Lake Ontario region, HWA has been found in Nova Scotia and has the potential to cause a lot of damage to our forests. Attendees will learn to recognize signs of an HWA infestation and what to do if they find the pest. You can register for the zoom meeting here: https://www.sleloinvasives.org/event/hike-to-protect-your-hemlocks/ *Christmas Bird Count - Saturday, December 19th* Each year, Christmas Bird Counts (CBC) are conducted across North America. The information collected by thousands of volunteer participants forms one of the world?s largest sets of wildlife survey data. If you wish to help with the Wolfville CBC and have not registered please do so with George Forsyth (ge4syth at gmail.com), the coordinator. George has indicated that some areas could use help for surveying in the field and that we need more feeder watchers. If you have a bird feeder within the count circle and are able to identify birds, you can email George to register. You can also get more information on the area and how to participate here: Wolfville Christmas Bird Count ? 19 December 2020 . NEWS When a short vacation to his family cabin turned into a 7-month stay, David Suzuki decided to start a podcast. It is out now and in this podcast "Suzuki explores how the pandemic can help us refocus on what?s most important, and what a green and just recovery from COVID-19 could look like." https://davidsuzuki.org/podcast/ *Mainland Moose Update* The two attached PDFs, written by Doug Hickman and titled 'GUTTED', provide a good background and new perspective to the issue in southwest Nova Scotia. The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve includes a 'buffer zone' that is currently under threat due to logging. This paper was sent to UNESCO and a number of government departments. Concerns around the endangered mainland moose have been ongoing. You might recall there is a blockade set up in Digby County, calling for the government to halt logging in the area to allow for an independent review to establish best management practices. This website is continuously updated as articles on the topic are published: http://nsforestnotes.ca/ I hope you're all having a good December thus far. As always, if you have any photos, stories or articles you'd like to share with the members please let me know. We received over 50 responses to the strategic plan survey and a dozen or so emails with comments on the discussion paper. Thank you all for your input, we really appreciate it. The responses have all been collated and distributed to the board for review. The board will have a meeting in the new year specifically to go over these responses, decide how to proceed and produce a new Strategic Plan document. As of now, we have not made any decisions regarding membership fees, and so we must continue with the current model for the 2021 year. Therefore, please send in your membership fee in the new year. You can do so on the website. In addition, if you go to the website you'll notice a few changes. All of the pages and content are the same, but the overall look of the site is quite different. We will continue to revise and update the site over the next few weeks so don't be alarmed if it changes. Soren sent out an email a few weeks ago announcing that you can now donate to the BNS through Canada Helps. It is very simple. You can fill out an online form for Canada Helps through the BNS website here . Or, you can go directly to canadahelps.org and search for the Blomidon Naturalists Society. You can either send a one-time donation, or set up monthly recurring donations. Also, when you donate through Canada Helps you immediately receive a tax receipt. I am terribly sorry that we were Zoom Bombed. Luckily Riley acted very quickly and closed down the two individuals. We will be looking into how to prevent such an ?attack? in the future. Despite this, I hope you found the presentation interesting.
