Hello everyone:

Early Friday morning, the Moon will pass in front of Venus and the weather forecast is excellent!

This occultation will already be underway when the Moon rises, as seen from Nova Scotia. In order to see Venus reappear from behind the Moon you will need a good eastern horizon.

You will want to be in place by at least 5:00 AM as Venus should appear from behind the dark limb of the Moon at about 5:07 AM. As the Sun will not rise until almost 5:30, you can safely sweep around with binoculars to spot the Moon. It will be about 20° to the right of the brightest spot on the horizon which will be where the Sun will rise. To get an idea of that angle, make a fist with your thumb inside your fingers. Now hold your fist at arms length. The angle from one side of your fist to the other is 10°. so two fists, side by side, will give 20°.

The Moon will only be 7° above the horizon and will be a very thin crescent. Once Venus passes from behind the Moon it will be very bright and you should have to trouble seeing it.
