I hope you have had a good beginning of Spring. It is hard not to feel hopeful and excited for the welcome warm weather. Have you been able to spend much time outdoors? I sense I am not the only one who tapped trees and made syrup this past month. This was my first attempt and it was very fun. Though I was only able to tap trees during a cold spout, so did not yield much! As I'm sure those of you who have boiled sap for hours understand, I have a new appreciation for the delicious pancake topping. It was a great exercise that invited me to think more deeply about the products I consume without much thought. I ask myself, where did this salt come from? What kind of tree did this paper originate from? When we pause for these thoughts, we see products as more than items meant to serve us, but as minerals and plants that were once a part of the environment around us. This has been a large part of my journey to connect with nature, even from inside my apartment. What is something you use everyday that you don't know how it's made or where it comes from? We also have a number of awesome events this month that will get you thinking about the environment around you. The Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative will join us for our monthly meeting. In addition we have the Early Valley Birding and Highway Cleanup field trips coming up this April! More details and registration links are below. Special focus this summer is being put on identifying and restoring thermal refugia habitat (springs that provide cool water in summer, and reduced ice-cover in winter). Money will be raised through the sale of raffle tickets on a canoe. Tickets are available online only at the following link: https://www2.rafflebox.ca/raffle/jwa. To learn more about their work, go to their website here . Also, a few weeks ago Soren led a field trip to teach people how to survey for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. Our hope is to 'train' people to go out and monitor stands for HWA, so we can better understand the spread. Information on this is available on the website: If you go to the BNS site , you will see 'Community Projects' in the menu, then click on Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. This will take you to Soren's website (click here ) which has a number of great resources on the invasive species and surveying. If you would like to get involved or learn how to survey, let us know. I like to think, much like Mother's Day and Black History Month, that everyday should be Earth Day. However, today is a great reminder to pause and reflect on what an appreciation and understanding of our planet means to you. To me, Earth Day is a reminder to prioritize getting outside. My apartment building is getting together for a litter clean up of our neighbourhood this evening which I'm looking forward to. Are you able to celebrate Earth Day today? Be it a moment to reflect, a walk or a cleanup, small actions build up to create a connection to nature around you. If you are interested in giving back to the planet, we have our biannual highway clean up taking place this Sunday at 9am. This is a global bioblitz to encourage people to get outside and take as many observations of nature as possible, between April 30th and May 3rd. While I will remain a board member, I won't be able to do as much work as I do now. The main task that I hope will continue when I'm gone, with the help of a few volunteers, is the monthly enewsletter. If anyone is interested in working on this, please let me know. I am so thankful to have had the opportunity to work with BNS, I've learned so much and really enjoyed these past months. We have such an incredible group of members and board here! Lastly, for those of you interested, I'll be working with Kejimkujik?s forest research project to better understand hemlock woolly adelgid. Sounds like there will be a lot of field work, which I'm quite excited about. And as some of you know, I'm returning to do a masters program at Dalhousie in September. Hopefully, this work and my research can still be of interest to BNS and I'd be very happy to keep you all updated. If any of you are looking to become more involved in the Society please do reach out. There are a few areas we could use volunteers but the newsletter is a larger one. Now that it is all set up, I expect it to take about a day's work each month. Let me know if you have any questions. We have a lot of work to complete in managing against the collapse of our most iconic conifer tree, the eastern hemlock. Riley will play an important role in prioritizing hemlock stands for possible treatment (pending Mi'kmaq consultations), assessing old growth hemlock stands, and participating in a number of monitoring strategies and research. The only means of keeping our hemlock alive in the short-term against HWA is to use micro-injections of chemical every 5 + years, sort of like a COVID vaccine, but for hemlock-against HWA. Prices are now within reach for land owners who wish to place hemlocks on? temporary life support, and we are working within a cross-departmental group to strive for even cheaper solutions.? We are bracing to lose thousands of hemlocks in the park over the next 3-10 years.? The Canadian Forest Service is helping us build upon advanced research in the USA in long-term solutions using biocontrols, i.e., tiny predator beetles and silver flies.? The challenge is to keep trees alive in the interim while devising a safe and tested biocontrol? solution.? The pending loss of our last great hemlock forests occurs at a time when every mature tree counts for sequestering carbon against climate change effects. We need the best and brightest minds to work on HWA, and are happy that Riley is joining our team as some of us grow rather battle weary.? Like many others, I've noticed her achievements and modern approach within BNS.? I hope she will stay involved in this amazing group of naturalists that have shared and taught many of us our best knowledge and respect for nature. Welcome Riley!? BNS members can come and visit you in Keji this summer.
