Continuing with the Climate Change series this winter, Alanna Syliboy will be teaching us about Frost Fish Month (Punamuiku). January, known as Punamuiku, or Frost Fish Month, is the time of year when punamu (Mi’kmaw for Atlantic Tomcod or frost fish) swim upstream to spawn. Alanna Syliboy, the Mi’kmaw Knowledge & Community Engagement Manager at the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq will discuss the historical and cultural significance of Punamuiku, as well as the effects of climate change on punamu.

** Field Trip: Winter on Snowshoes
------------------------------------------------------------
January 16th and 23rd @ 10:00am

For all the details and to register for either day, visit our website (https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=725d7360e0&e=b24cf58224) or Facebook event (https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=ee91ece895&e=b24cf58224) .
Snow transforms the landscape into stories that unfold as we follow tracks of foxes, mice, and other mammals. A Snowshoe Hare hops along and is pounced on by a Great Horned Owl. Without snow to show us the tracks, wing marks, and perhaps a drop of blood, we would not have known the drama took place.

Soren will lead this hike on snowshoes or skis. By studying the characteristic imprints made by different organisms we will interpret the various stories that have unfolded.

Cuttlefish have shown that they can think ahead, and that hungrier ones will make a choice to hunt larger prey even when smaller prey is more available.

>From predatory beetles to hybrid hemlocks, this article (https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=2ae5e6c030&e=b24cf58224) shows perhaps our beloved hemlock trees may survive the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid.

A new study has found cuttlefish to be more intelligent than previously believed. They are able to plan ahead and make decisions based on learned experience. Ever since watching My Octopus Teacher, as per Soren's suggestion a few months ago, I have been quite amazed by our cephalopod friends. NYT article here.
