It always bothers me a bit that once summer is here, the days start to get shorter. But summer is here, and Covid restrictions have been eased ? life is good. I am participating in the Listening Together project surveying birds in Eastern Hemlock stands organized by John Kearney. You will recall he gave a webinar earlier this year on the use of AudioMoths for recording bird songs. I volunteered to conduct a point count of birds in a hemlock stand. John sent me two AudioMoths which I set up. It had been several years since I did a bird survey, so I practiced on several mornings to make sure I had all the songs committed to memory. This was thoroughly enjoyable. Once I felt confident that I could recognize the various bird songs, I went out and conducted two surveys. There is something special about being out in the woods in the very early morning. The forest is a symphony of bird song. Each survey consists of five locations well within a hemlock stand and about 200 metres apart. I would listen for 10 minutes, and record birds heard at each point. Before I was to conduct the second survey, I received an e-mail notice that the bird app, Merlin now had the added feature that it will automatically recognize bird songs. I was intrigued, so I downloaded the update to my iPad and took it with me out in the field. I was amazed at how accurate it was correctly identifying birds by their song. And birds could be singing at quite some distance, and it could still detect and correctly identify the birds. The technology of smartphones and iPads is truly amazing, not to mention the programming that goes into have the devices record the songs and then compare them to a vast library of songs and pick the right match. When I started birding over fifty years ago, I would go out with my Petersen Field guide and binoculars. When I heard a bird singing that I did not recognize, I would patiently approach the singing bird to try to get a glimpse of it and then match the song to the particular species. This was time-consuming work but very satisfying. Going through this process somehow cemented together with the song and the species, although each year, one does have to familiarize oneself with the birds and songs. But using the Merlin program, all one has to do is launch the app, and the program identifies the species. To me, this takes away the joy of birdwatching and bird surveying ? anyone can take their smartphone in the field and accept blindly what the program tells you the bird is you are hearing. Where is the joy? Anyway, the technology is truly amazing. --Soren ** UPCOMING EVENTS ------------------------------------------------------------ Wildflower Identification Course, Saturday, July 10 On Saturday, July 10th we are hosting a wildflower identification course! Judy ---------- Forwarded message --------- From: Judy Lipp Date: Wed, Jul 21, 2021 at 10:15 PM Subject: Comments on the SDG and CC Plan for Clean Growth To: *RE: Nova Scotia Sustainable Development Goals Act and the Climate Change Plan for Clean Growth* To Whom it May Concern, *A prosperous, sustainable future for our children, youth and young people is a dimming prospect in light of the climate emergency and ecological collapse we are experiencing. And that terrifies me, devastates me and shames me. All children (human and non-human) want and deserve nothing more than I did growing up ? to live long healthy and happy lives in a just world. We owe it to our children and life on earth to take bold, decisive and collective action to steer a hopeful and healthy path for those that follow us. That is why I am making time in my busy summer to write this note. * We all want the best possible future for ourselves, our children and our children?s children, both in terms of individual health and well-being and in terms of the world they will inherit. We want our children to be healthy and happy, caring and committed, resilient and resourceful, justly treated and respected and have all their basic needs well taken care of. This implies that the natural world that sustains them is intact and healthy too and that systems of oppression and racism are dismantled. The track we are on will not get them there ? our actions and inaction (today and over the past half century) will lead to a world on fire, indeed, we are already there. We have precious little time to steer a new course that limits the climate catastrophe and ecological collapse which could very well sever us from life sustaining sources. For Nova Scotia, the Sustainable Development Goals Act will be the cornerstone of our provincial response to this moment. We must seize the moment of incredible collective learning, community consciousness and provincial pride in which we became the envy of the world in our Covid response demonstrating what can be accomplished when leaders lead and we all act in the collective interest. The same attitude and determinedness is needed now and as a province we are ready because we have just proven what we can accomplish. In that vein, I am adding my voice to the Climate Emergency Unit, Ecology Action Centre and many others to have the Sustainable Development Goals Act address and include action on all of the following areas: 1. Allow no projects that harm water, waterways and watersheds. Water is the life force on which we all depend ? we cannot afford to tamper with our water - fresh or salt water. 2. Adopt and implement all recommendations from the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the Calls to Action from the. Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Sustainable development begins with justice, equity and anti-racism. 3. End environmental racism: The Province must update its existing environmental decision-making process to include a race-equity lens by the end of 2021. 4. Spend what it takes to make the transition to a fossil free future based on social justice: 4% of GDP spent on making the just transition and at least 40% of this on marginalized and front line communities 5. Pivot our institutions to get the job done: Efficiency NS becomes GHG focused; Utility and Review Board includes environment and greenhouse gases within its jurisdiction and performance metrics 6. Shift from voluntary and incentive-based policies to mandatory measures: No more fossil fuel use or extraction 1. No onsite fossil fuel hookups in new construction starting in 2023 2. No onsite fossil fuel use in buildings by 2030 3. Illegal to sell new internal combustion engine vehicles by 2025 4. No new fossil fuel extraction, exploration or permits starting 2022. 7. Support regenerative agriculture that supports ecological systems and builds our food security 8. Halt clear-cutting immediately and support regenerative forest practices 9. Tell the truth about the severity of the climate and ecological crisis and communicate a sense of urgency about the measures necessary to combat it 1. NS Climate Communications: Regular climate updates, similar to the frequency, detail, and tone of the COVID-19 updates and transparency 2. Better data: Currently our climate data is very hard to aggregate and all greenhouse gas inventories are about at least a year out of date. Our data must be easily accessible and frequently updated so we can track our greenhouse gas reduction and climate adaptation processes. We cannot delay on these actions. They can all be done and quickly if the same sense of urgency and crisis mitigation is brought to bear that we witnessed during Covid. We all came together during the last 18 months to do what needed to be done ? we pivoted at a moment?s notice, supported each other and made sacrifices for the good of the community. The willingness to do the same for the climate crisis is evident across this province and country, but we need government leadership, now! Give our children a reason for hope, give our children the liveable and prosperous future they deserve. We owe it to them and to ourselves so we can look in the mirror and say ? we acted just time! We will have displays of Monarch eggs, larvae, chrysalis, and there will be Monarchs in the field. ( I counted 35 yesterday) The field (2 ha) has paths to walk around the milkweed and explore if you like. We hope you will help us find chrysalis and larve in the field and mark their location. Alison and I will describe what has been going on this year and answer questions you might have. At the present time the Monarchs are laying their eggs and we are seeing more caterpillars in the milkweed. We have had about 20 Monarch eclose from chrysalis we have protected inside so far. So we are probably experiencing a surge in the local population from children of the Monarchs that arrived in mid-June. There are mosquitoes present so bring some insect repellent. Covid restrictions will be followed for outside recreation events. At the moment the weather looks OK but if it a rainy day on Sunday the event will be posponed. We look forward seeing you. Like many of you I imagine, the heat waves and forest fires in the West recently have made/re-made climate change devastatingly real for us. So, Alan Warner, Alison Stuart, and I and many others are working to get our voices heard in a local way in Wolfville tomorrow, Thursday, July 29 as part of the Canada on Fire Day of Action through 350.org ( https://act.350.org/event/on-fire-doa/). *We are meeting at Kody Blois's office at 11:30 am (**24 Harbourside Drive near Waterfront Park*). The aim is to put climate change on the federal and provincial election agendas via meeting outside MP constituency offices with a request to commit to two items of climate action: 1. An immediate moratorium on new fossil fuel approvals and a freeze on all fossil fuel expansion projects under construction -- including the Trans Mountain pipeline. 2. Just Transition legislation to support workers and communities, especially Indigenous and remote communities as we move towards a 100% renewable energy future. We are hoping to have a respectful, informed, short conversation with Kody Blois with SO MANY people there. We are inviting our local candidates in the provincial election as well for the conversation. We are also hoping that some folks will bring musical instruments and share a song that is meaningful to the event. We need to show that *climate action is a top political concern that requires urgent and consistent action.* It will not be long (no more than an hour), but this is an urgent issue! We sure hope to see you there, and please, please forward this to your networks so that it radiates out and it becomes a large and diverse group of people. If you can't attend, but support the message, please consider registering your support by emailing our MP Kody Blois at Kody.Blois at parl.gc.ca with the message about urgent climate action via the moratorium and the Just Transition Act. If you are not sure about the moratorium, please consider these items: - Canada provides almost ten times as much subsidy support to fossil fuel companies per capita than the United States (from this Financial Post article on which countries are still providing fossil fuel subsidies, from a lens of which countries are still making a poor financial investment) - The International Energy Agency in May this year stated in a drastic position-changing report that all remaining fossil fuels need to stay in the ground for a livable future, which explains the Financial Post article's tone.
