However, I do hope (and believe) we have some snow still to come. There are too many spots I have yet to explore by snowshoe and ski! If you have gone on an enjoyable walk, ski or snowshoe adventure, you are welcome to send any pictures, notes or observations to Riley at rileyscanlan16 at gmail.com to be featured in our next e-newsletter. Our February meeting was very informative; Kristen Noel from the NS Invasive Species Council went over some of the most prominent invasive critters in our province. This bill would act as a tool for government and landowners to protect ecologically important land. There has been a lot of media and misinformation spread around the act. The BNS board has produced a letter stating our support for this act, which you will find attached. In addition, here are a number of helpful resources that explain what this act means, how it works, and what it does *not* mean. Nature Nova Scotia's great graphic on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NatureNS/posts/4106853709363032 East Coast Environmental Law explains the act: https://www.ecelaw.ca/blog/nova-scotia-needs-a-biodiversity-act.html?fbclid=IwAR0oG85ovWdQcKE5yxZONeun3H9yfJ-goI1NeckJMJ7YTaiNlZQf-IXLNBg Nature Nova Scotia and the Ecology Action Centre have produced letter templates that you can add your name to and send off to MLAs. Note that both templates do not have a spot for your postal code. It is sent to all MLAs, but I recommend adding your postal code so your local MLA knows you are a constituent. This is a time to turn off your lights and screens for one hour, as an action of support for the environment. It is also an opportunity to think about how we spend our time. What will you do for one hour to support the environment, without electronics? This is actually something I have been thinking about a lot lately. As some of you know, I live and do all this work from a little desk in my Halifax apartment. It's strange that I spend so much time thinking and caring about nature activities, and yet I have to bike (or convince someone to drive me) fairly far to get into wild places. How else can I, and so many others who face even greater barriers, better connect to nature when it's hard to access and without relying on a computer screen? Perhaps my favourite answer to that question came to me in an environmental facebook group . Someone had decided to draw 30 wildflower species found in the Acadian Forest Region, one each day of the month. I joined in and started drawing them too; it has been so enjoyable. Then, just this morning, I came across an event that will teach participants how to start Nature Journaling: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/art-of-nature-lecture-series-the-miller-room-nature-journaling-tickets-145582991647?fbclid=IwAR0jialB1B-F2Fg5o8Fte4ag5DyoXQan02FjomjTKY1OKxbZStJVzC3G3qE Nature Journaling involves taking the time to draw out your observations of nature. So, if you are at a loss for what to do this Earth Hour, do not despair! I invite you to join this session to explore a new way of observing, understanding and appreciating nature. When I sit to draw a mushroom, a flower or a twig, I notice more details than I ever would have otherwise. Mind you, I have no experience drawing so while the result never looks quite like it "should", the process is super fun. Yes, this activity involves a screen, but I hope the session will provide the tips and inspiration needed to go out and continue nature journaling on your own. Note that if you can't make the live meeting (tomorrow at 7:00pm local time), you can still register and they will email you the recording after. If you already have plans for Earth Hour, please share them! You can email me or post about it in our Facebook group . There is also a list on this website of activity ideas.
