She has led quite an impressive career, pioneering modern forest ecology principles. Her main focus is on the below-ground fungal networks that connect trees and facilitate underground inter-tree communication and interaction. Dr. Simard has published a new book titled Finding the Mother Tree (https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=4fba803ee5&e=b24cf58224) that I think you will all appreciate. The book is the product of many years of research on the Mother Tree Projec (https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=4167db79bd&e=b24cf58224) t and will be released tomorrow. You can listen to Dr. Simard speak about it in a CBC interview here (https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=b02950bdc4&e=b24cf58224) . In addition, Canadian Geographic is hosting a webinar with Dr. Suzanne Simard this Thursday at 9:30pm (AST). It will be streamed on Facebook and you should not need a Facebook account to be able to watch it. Here is the link to the meeting information: https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=d96e86e2ff&e=b24cf58224 I am hoping to attend, or to at least watch the recording, as I'm sure it will be a wonderful event. Suzanne Simard has helped pave the way for future female scientists to ask difficult, innovative and pertinent questions of the natural world. I encourage you to learn about her work! Hi everyone, I hope you are having a great May thus far. I'm sure some of you took part in the City Nature Challenge (https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=c236f99062&e=b24cf58224) last weekend, and may even be helping to identify observations. This was the first year I participated and it was a really fun way to see my neighbourhood with new eyes. If you want more citizen science, May 8th is World Migration Bird Day and ebird will be having Global Big Day 2021 (https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=cc36a2fb66&e=b24cf58224) to celebrate. I wanted to quickly say thank you to all who sent in kind messages in response to my announcement that I am starting a new position and leaving BNS. I'm a little sad this will indeed be the last monthly update I send to you all. However, we are very lucky to have Virginia Brooke, a BNS volunteer who has graciously agreed to carry on this eNewsletter! Gathering all the event information and posters is quite a lot of work and we still need more volunteers. If you are interested in getting more involved with the Society this should take no more than a day of work each month and we'd greatly appreciate it. Let me know if this is of interest. We had planned to host our first full day workshop, Beginner Birdwatching, later this month but it has been cancelled. The field trip and subsequent workshops are TBD and may be postponed, more information on this will be sent out later. However, the zoom meetings shall prevail! Information on our monthly meeting and other COVID-safe events below. Have a wonderful weekend, Riley ** EVENTS ------------------------------------------------------------ ** May Meeting: Medway Community Forest Cooperative & Biodiveristy ------------------------------------------------------------ Monday, May 17th @ 7:30pm You must register through zoom here (https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=88081d9b8a&e=b24cf58224) . We will learn from the Medway Community Forest Cooperative about their biodiversity work including a baseline study and ongoing migratory bird monitoring. This meeting is part of our new themed series, Biodiversity. ** Workshop: Beginner Birding - CANCELLED ------------------------------------------------------------ May 22nd Our first workshop on Beginner Birdwatching has been cancelled due to COVID-19. This will be my last eNewsletter I send to you all. However, we are very lucky to have Virginia Brooke join us in volunteering to publish future eNewsletters for you all! Virginia has graciously agreed to put together the newsletters, but we could use one or two other volunteers to help collect and organize event information (make a poster, get the zoom links, etc.). I am very happy to set up a virtual meeting to walk you through the process. Please email me at rileyscanlan16 at gmail.com if you are at all interested in helping with this. These former Bowater Mersey lands encompass dozens of undeveloped lakes, brooks, and still waters that connect its remote interior to the ocean. The Blomidon Naturalists Society will write a letter of support to designate the Ingram River Wilderness Area. We ask that you, as individuals, consider showing your support as well. The Celebration of Nature is just around the corner! As we discussed last night, we know that the majority of people within the larger nature network here are not current members of NatureNS. I'd like to give your memberships a period of time where they can register for the Celebration for free. Below I've linked a page where anybody can register for the event, but you'll see there is a limited-time free offer on tickets for members of our member organizations. *Please share with your membership and let them know that they can participate for free if they register by end of day, May 23rd.* I've also attached a graphic with a sneak peek at the schedule (which still has a few presentations to be confirmed), one sized for facebook and one for twitter. I'll follow up with a full schedule shortly. It reminded me of their Mi'kmaq name, Kaktukopunjej, or ?Thunder Bird? which means that thunder will soon arrive. > > I?m reaching out this morning in regards to the Robie Tufts Nature Centre and Acacia University (U-Hall) roosts. Kristine Hanifen, our Aerial Insectivore Technician, has helped me coordinate surveyors for almost all of the roost sites but with the shifting public health restrictions in NS it has been a bigger challenge this year. As well, given the many folks who contribute to roost monitoring in Wolfville each year, I wanted to continue Jim?s efforts to keep everyone in the loop with roost count updates. > > So, all that said, we are looking for surveyors to cover both roosts for the National Roost Monitoring surveys, as well as throughout the season on a more casual basis. 2021 National Roost Monitoring Dates: > > May 22 (optional) > May 26 > May 30 > June 3 > June 7 > > Ideally surveys should be paired so we have folks at both sites on the same nights to help with those challenging evenings when swifts switch roosts but this is a logistical challenge. > > We are also looking for help this year to check nest sites in and around the Wolfville area. I?m happy to circulate a list of sites but the best way to find survey sites and submit survey data for these sites is by registering as a SwiftWatch participant on NatureCounts, here: https://www.birdscanada.org/birdmon/ai/main.jsp or by downloading the NatureCounts app on your phone (a new option this year!). If you would like reminders about the dates or want to download survey materials without logging into NatureCounts, you can always visit the SwiftWatch website: https://www.birdscanada.org/bird-science/swiftwatch/ > > > Thanks for reading this very long email, and please feel free to circulate to other SwiftWatchers in the Wolfville/Kentville area. As always, don?t hesitate to reach out to me or Kristine if you have questions or swift news to share! > > Take care, > > Ally > > > Allison Manthorne > Coordinator | Coordonnatrice > Maritimes SwiftWatch | Suivi du Martinet dans les Maritimes > Birds Canada | Oiseaux Canada > P.O. They did this in order to enter into a Letter of Offer with a private developer, who wants to develop 2-3 golf courses and a residential community. Biologists warn that this would mean ?complete destruction? of the site?s ecological values. Owls Head Provincial Park is a biodiverse property with undisturbed coastal heathlands, salt marshes and bogs, a freshwater lake, estuaries, and over 5 miles of coastline. It is bordered by offshore eelgrass beds and is home to several species of conservation concern. We are lucky to have such diverse areas in our province and should do what we can to protect them. There are many other ways you can show support, such as displaying a yard sign or writing a letter to the editor, which are all explained on their website .
