Message-ID: Hello everyone, We have an upcoming highway clean-up this coming Sunday November 7th, at 9:00am. The raindate is the following Sunday. The clean-up will happen along NS Trunk 1 from the west edge of Wolfville to Deep Hollow Road. BNS has adopted this section of road and we are committed to keeping it clear of garbage. The group will meet in the Elderkin's parking lot on Main St, in the west end of Wolfville. PLEASE SEE EVENT DETAILS AND REGISTER HERE. [1] Open to all, except children under 12 as per Dept. of Transportation regulations. It should be fun and efficient with many hands working together! Thanks, Caroline -- Caroline Beddoe She/her Coordinator, Blomidon Naturalists Society Blomidon Naturalists Society activities take place in Mi'kma'ki, the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq People. This territory is covered by the "Treaties of Peace and Friendship" which did not deal with the surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi'kmaq title. We want to recognize that outdoor education and play would not be possible without access to the natural world that has been stewarded since time immemorial by the many Indigenous peoples of this land. We acknowledge that we have a responsibility to honour and learn about their histories and current cultures and to actively work in support of reconciliation. We are committed to fostering respectful and sustainable relationships with the Indigenous Peoples of this land, with all other organisms, with the land and with the water. Message-ID: SHARING THIS NOTE FROM EMILY LEGRAND: Hello BNS board and members, Below is my message to the weekly climate action email list I maintain, outlining an opportunity to take action on Bill 57. If you want to be on my email list, just let me know what email to use and I can add you. I send it out typically once per week and it includes local, provincial and federal online and in person opportunities to take substantive, collective, often political action on the climate emergency. Hi there everyone, What a whirlwind climate political action time it has been, everywhere and Nova Scotia is no exception, fortunately for us. We've got something for you all to act on TODAY/TONIGHT, or tomorrow morning, and due to the short notice collaborative work of over 30 organizations, it'll be quick and easy too. Yesterday Bill 57: _Environmental Goals and Climate Change Reduction Act_ went to Law Amendments for over ten hours, with people from our NS environmental community speaking in thorough, informed and passionate ways. But, no amendments were passed. That will happen tomorrow (hopefully!) at the Committee of the Whole. So now is our last chance to give our MLAs a push to make this pretty good bill great and usher in the change we need for a livable future. Can you write them a letter via this webform hosted by the Ecology Action Centre, with talking points of the proposed amendments provided? Should take no more than 10 minutes, with a bit of personal introduction and some copy pasting, and a few sentences about why you care about a livable future. Ugg.... just as I type I see that someone in the organizing crew just heard on the radio that Minister Halman won't make any changes. Let's still try!!!! Highway Clean-Up Recap: Yesterday we had a beautiful sunny morning for our fall highway clean-up. We had an enthusiastic and effective group of 10 members who spent an hour and a half along highway 1 between the west edge of Wolfville and Deep Hollow Road. In total, 11 garbage bags were filled. Still quite a lot, with the usual suspects of coffee cups, plastic wrapping and other food packaging proliferating. However, some members who have helped in years past noted a decrease in garbage this time around, which is heartening. Let's hope that downward trend continues. A big thank you to all those who came out and clambered through ditches and brought keen eyes and energy! Many hands made for light work and a delightful sunny walk. See the photo attached below (though I was too busy picking up litter to remember to snap more photos of our great clean-up crew). Thank Yous! A big thank you as well to all those who have participated in BNS events recently, to those who have volunteered their time and passion to activities and projects, to those doing so much behind the scenes in various roles, and to those who have supported this work through generous donations, words of support and other contributions. Upcoming Activities: This upcoming Sunday November 14th, at 2:00 pm, there is another field trip: "Preparing for Winter." This will take place along the Millennium Trail in Wolfville. Soren will lead a walk talking about how plants and animals prepare for winter. See details here [1]. As always, all events and meetings can be found on our website under "Activities" here [2]. Stay tuned for more information on the upcoming AGM. It is happening this Sunday at 2:00pm along the Millennium Trail in Wolfville. Details and registration here. [1] Second, our ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING is coming up next Monday November 15th at 7:30pm. More details to come later this week. Also, Flying Squirrel Adventures' NATURE FOR NEWCOMERS program has been very successful thus far. Their next event is November 27th. Nature for Newcomers is a program open to any one - all ages, all backgrounds - who is new to the Valley. This month the walk will start at Miner's Marsh and then head up to the VCLA gardens on Oakdene Avenue for a campfire and warm treats. For more info see here [2]. Registration is required. Snacks are free and transportation support is available. Please share this information and poster with anyone you know who is new to the Valley who may enjoy seeing new natural spaces and meeting new people. A great introduction to the wonderful naturalist community in the area! Our friends up at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts, where we host field trips and workshops, have asked me to share an event that some of our members may be keen on: On November 19-21 they are hosting a WOMEN'S OUTDOOR WEEKEND RETREAT, lead by Jamie MacLean. Jamie will share their passion for and knowledge about the natural world and outdoors skills - the weekend will involve lots of time outside, creative activities, local food and more. Find more information here [3]. Finally, the BNS has a fantastic membership with varying passions and backgrounds with regards to the natural world. MEMBERS ARE WELCOMED TO HOST FIELD TRIPS, WEBINARS, TALKS, ETC. PLEASE REACH OUT IF YOU HAVE AN IDEA OR ARE KEEN and we can make plans for the winter and beyond. Given that the leases are attracting zero interest from the oil companies, reality suggests that there is no business case for this! Message-ID: Hi everyone, If you are reading the news this evening you may have seen the good news: the developer behind the plan to turn Owl's Head Provincial Park into a golf course has withdrawn the offer, citing lack of government support. See the article from CBC here. [1] (Thanks to Ken for prompting me to share it.) As both west and east coasts see the impacts of extreme weather events, I find that it is heartening to have some good news amid the climate and ecological crises. Owl's Head has led to a great grassroots effort by so may people across this province, and that is also worthy of celebrating and appreciating. I wish we didn't have to fight so hard, but my heartfelt gratitude goes out to all those who helped out with this campaign in many ways and who have demonstrated the keen desire to protect biodiversity in Nova Scotia and the wonderful care and passion that exist in our communities. We sighed with relief and celebrated the news of Lighthouse Links, the developer behind the Owl's Head land sale, backing out of the deal. But things aren't over yet (as John notes, his sign is still up). The fate of Owl's Head is not ensured, and now is the time to call upon the provincial government to legally protect this land. CPAWS NS have created an action page, which is easy to use and only takes a minute or so to submit a letter to the provincial government asking them to permanently protect this area. Please take action here. [1] Let's tell the Nova Scotia government to legally protect the public lands at Owl's Head, to ensure that this ecological significant area does not face further threats and to help restore public trust in the integrity of our provincial protected areas system. AND TODAY, WE ARE LAUNCHING A FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN ON THIS "GIVING TUESDAY" TO HELP SUPPORT SOME OF THE COSTS OF OUR BUTTERFLYWAY PROJECT. The Butterflyway Project is an initiative launched by the David Suzuki Foundation, that is happening across the country. The aim is to plant pollinator gardens to support pollinator wildlife, biodiversity and raise awareness about the importance and plight of our local pollinators. Butterflyway was launched in our area by BNS members Carole and Carolyn. It is a volunteer-driven project that aims to plant 10 public pollinator gardens in 2022 (2 were planted in Wolfville last year). A subsequent aim is to promote and support individuals, towns, and municipalities to designate or plant pollinator patches, to campaign for less mowing in the spring and less yard clean-up in the fall, and related pollinator-friendly initiatives. We know that the holidays are a big time of spending, and Giving Tuesday provides a counterpoint to the frenzy of sales and consumerism we just had over the past weekend. It is a day to give a little back to cause that is important to our community and world. The BNS is so very grateful for the generous donations of our members and supporters over the years that help us do community projects such as this, along with our naturalist programming, environmental conservation support, and more. If you or a friend can pledge $5 today to help us plant native pollinator gardens, we are so grateful as this extra generosity will help us meet our goals. See our campaign page here [1]. And find more information on the project on the BNS website here [2]. Please share with your networks is you so desire. Thank you!
