[BNS_members] Suggest Names for the New BNS Publication- Prize for the Winner!

How about a two line title The first line would peak interest and invite people in beyond the BNS world - and make the connection that Kent referred to - showing we’re part of the natural world. Then the sub-title would be the facts. Something like:

Our Natural World

The Blomidon Naturalists Society’s Journal 

And then a land acknowledgment on the inside cover.

Hi everyone:

Given the recent discussion, I think that “The Blomidon Naturalists Journal” is quite appropriate. It tells people what it is, who produces it, and it is pronounceable, which will keep people from  just calling it “the BNS Newsletter”. (I know lots of people that cannot say Kejimkujik without adding an extra “vowel syllable” in the middle.)

There should be no problem putting a land acknowledgement in the publication. Dal’s is short and to the point: 

Dalhousie University is located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq. We are all Treaty people.

Great dialogue here! My two cents on all of this and title, is that we should consider relationally and communality. We have lost the interdependence and reciprocity thinking and action of our origins of nature. I feel the name needs to place us ‘of nature’  not outside of it, as I feel terms such as ‘environment’ suggest. What are terms that are holistic and move beyond just human elements—that espouse the relational turn.

I share Garry’s concerns about cultural appropriation if we use a Mi’kmaq word in the title. This is not a Mi’kmaq journal and, other than a shared interest in the natural world, I don’t see a connection to the Mi’kmaq community.

I've been following the discussion with great interest. I really like The Jijuktu’kwjek Journal that has been suggested along with a description of what it means and the ceded territory statement as someone earlier suggested.

However, there is a fine line between being supportive of a culture and appropriating it. In order to use a name like this it would be vary important to consult with the appropriate Mi’Kmaq and maybe even discuss some type of collaboration.

If using that name isn't appropriate then I'd suggest "The Blomidon Naturalist Journal" it's simple, easy to remember and clearly describes what it is and then perhaps, as someone suggested, a Mi'Kmaq translation below or on the inside page.
