Many BNS members & Board members, along with students and community members, are involved in this. As we look towards launching Climate Circles soon (a facilitated space for local climate organizing & action), this event may serve as an initial space to (re)connect around climate and environmental concern, hope & action. Blurb from the organizers: ? _Join us by candlelight to connect, share our concern for this world, find hope and gratitude among our community, and mobilize for climate and environmental action in the wake of COP27._ Friday November 18, 2022 5:00 pm - Clock Park, Wolfville A group of community members invite you to gather and connect over climate concern, hope and action. As we watch the news, we cannot help but feel despair. Yet, we know the power of coming together as a community to express our feelings, to inspire hope, and demand action. Let's build community connections that serve as the foundation for robust, inspired, heart-felt and necessary local climate action & biodiversity conservation. Among other things, let's speak for an end to fossil fuel exploration and oil and gas subsidies, and a just transition for workers. Join us for a gathering circle, poetry offerings, guided moments of connection and sharing, a candlelit walk through town to honour our grief, illustrate our hope and call for dedicated, serious climate action ... followed by a closing circle of gratitude, connection & hot chocolate (bring your own mug!) -- Caroline Beddoe She/her 613-619-1098 Program Coordinator Blomidon Naturalists Society Wolfville, Nova Scotia _ Blomidon Naturalists Society activities take place in Mi'kma'ki, the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq People. November 28th, Dec 6 & Dec 11 Message-ID: Hello BNS Board and Members, On behalf of the Blomidon Naturalists Society and supported by the Small Change Fund , the Climate Circles team (which is currently Sarah, Emily and Caroline) is excited to re-introduce ?Climate Circles? into our community. Climate Circles first ran in the winter of 2020 in Wolfville, and is a facilitated space for climate action of all forms. Are you feeling concerned about climate change? Do you want to meet others who share your concern to work alongside and take local action together? Join the Blomidon Naturalists Society for a re-convening of Climate Circles, a facilitated and supportive space to meet and work with people who are wanting to take climate action together. In these three sessions, offered in several locations and formats, we will focus on taking stock after more than two years of not meeting in person. We want to know who is wanting to re-engage, what climate action ideas you have, and what needs you have in order to take action. Come meet new people and help design a new Climate Circles meeting format for 2023 based on your ideas and needs. We are offering three sessions before the new year to assess community needs and connect with interested community members: (1) November 28th from 7-9 pm at the Wolfville Curling Club (2) December 6th from 7-9 pm online (zoom link & registration info below) (3) December 11th from 2-4 pm at the Valley Community Learning Association, Kentville If you would like to attend the online session, please register with the link below: Register in advance for this meeting on Dec 6, 2022: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcuduivrz8rGdRjGImff4EOzCPDVRKw6crz After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. The Bus is also collecting letters to bring to the Prime Minister at the COP to tell him Nova Scotians are keen on protecting biodiversity! We will meet in the parking lot by the park entrance at 3pm for art activities, games, an environmental letter writing station, warm drinks, small snacks, and at 4pm we will have a guided lantern-lit walk in the Marsh. All ages are welcome to come and there is no registration required for this event. -------- Original Message -------- SUBJECT: [BNS_members] Fwd: [NNS Board] Fwd: We need your voice at the NatureCOP! MAKE YOUR VOICE HEARD AT THE NATURECOP! Nature Canada is collecting letters from nature-loving individuals and will be delivering them to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau at the Nature COP in Montreal in early December. Submit an online letter, mail one to our office, or attend a local event to ensure that yours is included in the delivery. What is the COP? It's the 15th UN Conference of the Parties where international leaders will discuss a Global Biodiversity Framework. As the host nation, Canada has an opportunity to show leadership within the negotiations. It's an opportunity for the world to agree on a plan - to act together - to halt and reverse nature and species loss all over the planet. The letters collected should be directed to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and should convey the message of why Canada's nature and species are worth protecting and why we need a strong framework to halt and reverse its loss. How to get your message on the NatureBus: Attend a local event! Nature Canada is traveling across the country in the NatureBus and has partnered with local nature conservation organizations to host events at each of the stops. Attend one of the bus stop events to place your letter on the bus! Major cities we'll be passing through include Vancouver, Toronto, and Halifax. Check here [1] to see if the nature bus is coming to your town! Mail us a letter! Get together with friends and family to have a letter writing party and then mail the letters to Nature Canada's office at 300-240 Bank St, Ottawa, ON, K2P 1X4. It can be long or short, big or small! We'll ensure it makes its way to Montreal. Submit an online postcard! Can't make it to an event? Send your digital message TODAY and we'll add it to the letter bag! It is a time when many groups may be asking for your support, and we recognize that there are so many ways to give, be it gratitude, energy, volunteer time, financial support, or more. As we continue our commitment to nature connection, education, and conservation, we are seeking your support with two specific programs this year - two ways to give! If you have the capacity to give financially, we are so grateful. Thank you for your support in many ways. 1) Flying Squirrel Adventures Bursary Fund _Give the gift of nature play & learning. Help BNS (through our Flying Squirrel Adventures programming) make nature time accessible to more children & youth in the Valley. Our programs are offered on a pay-what-you-can basis to ensure that nature-time is widely accessible. We also address transportation barriers and support seasonal gear needs as much as possible._ In our 2021-22 season we provided over $8000 in bursaries and served over 1500 participants. You can help us grow our reach with a donation today! Donate here and indicate you are supporting our bursary program: https://www.canadahelps.org/en/charities/blomidon-naturalists-society/campaign/give-the-gift-of-nature-time/ Outdoor play in nature is an essential part of children's healthy development supporting their physical, emotional and mental well-being. Time in nature instills comfort in and a connection to nature that can lay a foundation for a life-long love for the natural world. Nature time is fundamental to individual, societal and planetary well-being. And yet, children are spending less time outside than ever before. Flying Squirrel Adventures was created to reverse this troubling trend. [1] 2) Climate Circles This Giving Tuesday, you can help the BNS in leading and convening local climate action projects through Climate Circles. Climate Circles is a facilitated meeting space where anyone feeling worried about climate change and wanting to take action with others can meet regularly to define and carry out local action projects to protect our natural world, strengthen our communities, and inspire change. When we turn our worry into action together, we create our own hope and our own good news. Easier said than done of course! And that's why Climate Circles facilitators are there to help us all build our action confidence and competence by setting a positive, encouraging and self-reflective tone, helping groups carve off do-able projects, providing tools and techniques to work through group process challenges, helping to connect people to local existing projects and providing relevant training opportunities to help individuals, groups and projects stay on track. Please donate at our crowdfunding page with our partner, the Small Change Fund, to help us get this project launched. The next $1000 donated will be matched! https://smallchangefund.ca/project/climate-circles-weekly-action-meetings-to-sustain-grassroots-climate-work/ [2] We had our first Climate Circles meeting last night and it was so great to connect, listen, express our ideas, and collaborate on this project together. We are hopeful for where it will lead us as a community keen to foster nature connection and protection, and inspirational environmental leadership.
