From coordinator at blomidonnaturalists.ca Tue Oct 4 18:11:10 2022 From: coordinator at blomidonnaturalists.ca (Caroline Beddoe) Date: Tue, 04 Oct 2022 20:11:10 -0300 Subject: [BNS_members] Monthly Meeting Oct 17: The Amazing Geological History of Nova Scotia Message-ID: <601b82125c4a632179243d1d72ee6e8d@blomidonnaturalists.ca> Good evening, The Blomidon Naturalists' next monthly meeting is MONDAY OCTOBER 17TH. We are delighted to have Sandra Barr giving a talk on the geology of this area and region: THE AMAZING GEOLOGICAL HISTORY OF NOVA SCOTIA! Date: Monday October 17 Time: 7:00 PM social with tea and treats (in-person); 7:30 PM start of meeting Location: IN PERSON IN WOLFVILLE (Location TBA - details as soon as possible, apologies! But save the date!) Or online on ZOOM (REGISTER HERE). [1] We learned a lot from our last hybrid meeting (and first attempt - thanks for your understanding) and we will iron out some issues to ensure a smooth experience for those in-person and those at home on Zoom. And as always, the meeting will be recorded and shared afterwards. Talk: Dr. Sandra Barr is a professor in Acadia's Earth and Environmental Science Department (and recent recipient of the 2022 Bancroft Award by the Royal Society of Canada). Sandra will give us a talk through time, taking us on an illustrated tour of the geological history of Nova Scotia, loosely linked to the new (2022) edition of the Atlantic Geoscience Society's best selling book "The Last Billion Years - a geological history of the Maritime Provinces of Canada". It is based on the rock record as preserved in Nova Scotia and will include basic information about how we can know so much about events that happened millions and even billions of years ago! Come learn the long history of this physical land with us. More details to come. Warmly, Caroline -- Caroline Beddoe She/her 613-619-1098 Program Coordinator Blomidon Naturalists Society Wolfville, Nova Scotia _ Blomidon Naturalists Society activities take place in Mi'kma'ki, the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq People. Message-ID: Good evening, A reminder of a few upcoming events (with more to come later in October and into November too): SUNDAY OCTOBER 16 AT 2:00 PM: FALL COLOURS FIELD TRIP - GASPEREAU RIVER TRAIL Join the Blomidon Naturalists Society for a Fall Colours Field Trip along the Gaspereau River Trail (see map here [1]) on Sunday October 16th at 2:00 pm. We will explore the changing fall foliage, mushrooms, birds, the river, and other natural curiosities. This walk is generally quite level along a well-trodden path alongside the river, though there are some ups and downs and steeper areas. There is a section right at the start that requires sure footing as the trail crosses a damp/wet section along the riverbank, and some parts of the trail can be muddy or have loose shale. Good footwear always recommended, as are walking sticks/hiking poles. There is some parking available across the road/bridge from the trailhead [1]. Carpooling is encouraged! We are seeking focus group participants to talk about the Wolfville Watershed Nature Preserve (Nova Scotia Nature Trust property) on Forest Hill Road. What: Focus Group Conversations on the Wolfville Watershed Nature Preserve Students from Acadia University in Environmental and Sustainability Studies are working with the Nova Scotia Nature Trust and have reached out to me at the Blomidon Naturalists to help host two focus groups in relation to the Wolfville Watershed Nature Preserve on Forest Hill Rd [1]. The Watershed, as you likely know, is a protected area featuring old-growth hemlock, Acadian forest, orchids, wetlands and more... and a frequent location for BNS field trips. So we are hoping some BNS members may have things to say! Focus groups are groups interviews featuring a small number of participants with a common focus/experience. Focus groups are moderated, where participants answers questions and engage in conversation in a shared setting. These focus groups would: * Help determine how people feel about the Watershed, including but not limited to its ecology and long-term conservation * Determine visitor issues and concerns * Explore why people do or don't visit * Support the work of the Nova Scotia Nature Trust in effectively conserving these lands * Support ESST students in developing their research method and facilitation skills. WHO: The students are seeking 8-10 naturalists/nature-loving people of any age (18+ for ethics/use of data collected in a report; though please note that formal consent forms may be requested if you participate) who are comfortable and keen to talk about the Watershed and help support its conservation and contribute to understandings about land use and access. Participants will be from one of two groups, which will form the two focus groups: (1) those who have visited the Wolfville Watershed two (2) or more times (2) those who are stakeholders/residents in the area but who have never been to the Watershed WHEN: Through November. You would participate in one (1) focus group session (in your relevant group) of 60-90 minutes. WHERE: In-person in Wolfville on Acadia's campus (with refreshments) or online on Teams. SOUNDS GREAT! HOW DO I GET INVOLVED? Please submit your contact information and interest of participation through this form here: https://forms.gle/hCPHRAYDV1fFZxCJ9 [2] ( [2]This information is only shared with myself and the four students leading the focus groups). Please reach out with any questions. We have several members stepping off the Board this year and are looking for new members to help review and shape the direction of the BNS. We meet from 6:30 to 8 PM on the second Wednesday of each month, except in July and August. Our meetings are still via zoom, although we have had some face-to-face strategic planning meetings. Our AGM is on November 21st and we would like to have a slate of names for Board membership. We are open for self nomination or for you to nominate someone who should be on the Board. If you nominate someone else, please obtain their permission/agreement first. We are also hoping to fill several Executive positions on the Board. In particular we are looking for a Treasurer. We have an excellent accountant who maintains the books and would provide the Treasurer with the reports to present to the monthly meetings of the Board. A 'official' description of the position of Treasurer is as follows: 1. The *Treasurer *shall have custody of all funds and accounts of the Society. He/She shall maintain complete and accurate books of accounting (will be supplied to the Treasurer by our accountant) and shall: 1. report when directed by the Board or by a general meeting the financial position of the Society; 2. sign documents and instruments that require his/her signature; 3. at each annual meeting of the Society present to the meeting a true account of the Society?s finances. We always need enthusiastic Board members to keep the BNS active and relevant and we look forward to having you working with us. Please respond directly to either myself (burka at upei.ca) or Soren (soren at bondrup.com) to nominate yourself or another individual or if you will let your name stand as Treasurer.
