From coordinator at blomidonnaturalists.ca Sun Sep 11 11:45:00 2022 From: coordinator at blomidonnaturalists.ca (Caroline Beddoe) Date: Sun, 11 Sep 2022 13:45:00 -0300 Subject: [BNS_members] BNS Monthly Meeting September 19: In-Person and Online! Message-ID: <8f37dfa63354cb2a82268eaa4fe33302@blomidonnaturalists.ca> Dear BNS members, We are excited to announce that our monthly meetings are resuming following summer break and that there will be an in-person option! This email contains many details as we navigate this hybrid meeting model - please read on for all the details! OUR MONTHLY MEETING AND PRESENTATION WILL BE MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 19TH, with the meeting commencing at 7:30 pm (with gathering prior to the meeting starting at 7:00pm at the Curling Club). The meeting will be held IN-PERSON AT THE WOLFVILLE CURLING CLUB AND ONLINE ON ZOOM, so please join us in the way that feels best for you. Full details further on below. DATE AND TIME: Monday, September 19th 7:00 pm social at the Wolfville Curling Club 7:30 pm meeting and presentation commence PRESENTATION: This month our presenter is PATRICK KELLY, giving a talk entitled "THE SUN IS NOT AN AVERAGE STAR; THE EARTH IS NOT AN AVERAGE PLANET." Last year, the BNS focused on biodiversity. This fall, the theme for our talks is taking a zoomed out lens, through both time and space, to understand the long history of our natural world and provide a different perspective to this precious things we call life on earth. So we are starting with the stars, and later moving to geology, fossil records and more. A bit about Pat's talk: Stars and their planets form at the same time, from large clouds of gas and dust. The vast majority of stars are smaller, cooler, and less luminous than the Sun. Almost 5000 exoplanets have been found so far; very few have properties similar to those of the Earth, although there are many types. Most people agree you need a carbon-based chemistry acting in liquid water for life to begin. Therefore, life on other planets (if it exists!) is expected to be found in the Goldilocks Zone around their stars, the distance at which a planet can have liquid water at its surface. This criterion alone rules out a lot of planets from having "life as we know it". As it turns out, there are places in our own solar system with a lot more liquid water than Earth, so life may be a lot closer than we think! LOCATION: WOLFVILLE CURLING CLUB *Please note, we will be upstairs. The upstairs is only accessible by stairs. We apologize for any accessibility concerns. The main floor is occupied at this time. If you will attend in person, could you kindly let us know here [1]. Thank you! OR ONLINE ON ZOOM. Please register here: https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZcvc-ysqD0qHdSyecogK6m5TMQilmakrA_E Thanks for your attention to all these details. If you have any questions, please reach out. Next WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 21ST, there will be a gathering to celebrate and remember Jim, and to send love to his partner Pat, now out in British Columbia. Many of you know that Jim and Pat moved to Burns Lake, BC, in May of 2022. There were missed but everyone wished them all the best as they settled in their new home close to Pat's family. Sadly, Jim died in late June, just weeks after their arrival. Many people have expressed their wish to gather to both remember Jim and send love to Pat. To that end, you are invited to join us at the ROBIE TUFTS CENTRE IN WOLFVILLE AT 6:30PM, WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 21ST. This will be an informal gathering hosted by friends of Pat and members of Blomindon Naturalists Society. People are invited to share memories of Jim and to write notes in a book for Pat. We also encourage you to bring any pictures you wish to share. We look forward to seeing you there. There will be some refreshments. Attached are some posters, you are welcome to share with friends of Jim and Pat. If you are not able to attend but wish to add your words to the book you can email Carolyn Campbell at cjcampbell2205 at gmail.com. Please reach out with any questions. Details below. FIRST, A REMINDER OF TONIGHT'S MONTHLY MEETING. In-person at the Wolfville Curling Club (upstairs) with tea and treats, starting at 7:00 pm, or online on Zoom, with the official meeting and presentation by Patrick Kelly, entitled "The Sun is not an average star, the Earth is not an average planet," starting at 7:30 pm. (Register for the Zoom here [1]). -- GET INVOLVED: CALLING FOR A BAN ON GLYPHOSATE There has been a lot of mobilization to ensure communities aren't sprayed by glyphosate this September. We are heartened by the hard work and care shown by people across the province to stand up for public and environmental health and say, in many ways, "don't spray us." The bigger push is to call for a moratorium on the use of aerial glyphosate spray across all forested lands in this province. The BNS Board recently submitted a letter to this effect, attached. Moreover, there is a PRINT PETITION (ATTACHED) being circulated by the No Spray North Mountain group to encourage A MORATORIUM ON THE AERIAL SPRAYING OF GLYPHOSATE BASED PRODUCTS ON OUR FORESTS IN NOVA SCOTIA. It must be printed, signed and then sent. Please print it out (without making any changes to the wording) and share it if you can! TOMORROW, THERE IS ALSO AN OPPORTUNITY FOR ENGAGEMENT: on SEPTEMBER 20TH, THE NORTH MOUNTAIN GROUP AND ALLIES WILL BE PRESENTING TO KINGS COUNTY COUNCIL OF THE WHOLE ASKING FOR THEIR SUPPORT IN THE EFFORT TO CONVINCE THE NOVA SCOTIA GOVERNMENT TO IMPOSE A TEMPORARY SUSPENSION (MORATORIUM) ON AERIAL HERBICIDE SPRAYING. The complete "ask" is posted below. Please come if you are able to show your support in the gallery and/or outside of the Municipal Complex (181 Coldbrook Village Park Drive, Coldbrook). The meeting begins at 9am and the presentation is on the agenda for 9:40am. Space in the gallery is limited to 50 people and masks are strongly suggested. Following a 10 minute presentation by Nina Newington and a 10 minute question period, Councillor Dick Killam will present "the ask" to the council (see below) . We hope to see you there. The petition for presentation to the Provincial Legislature will also be available for signatures tomorrow at the Municipal Complex . The petition will be presented by MLA Carmen Kerr (Annapolis) to the House of Assembly in October. (More details here: https://eco-action.ca/include/no-spray-north-mtn.htm) The ask: (1) That municipal council write a letter to Premier Tim Houston and Environment and Climate Change Minister Tim Halman, requesting that a moratorium be placed on aerial herbicide spraying until a formal report, requisitioned by the provincial government, on the net benefits or net losses of such activity to the residents of Nova Scotia can be obtained. (2) That council ask our solicitor to provide a legal opinion as to whether the municipality has any jurisdiction on banning the aerial spraying of glyphosate. (3) That council send a resolution based on (1) above to the NSFM (Nova Scotia Federation of Municipalities) for their fall meeting. -- Caroline Beddoe She/her 613-619-1098 Program Coordinator Blomidon Naturalists Society Wolfville, Nova Scotia _ Blomidon Naturalists Society activities take place in Mi'kma'ki, the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq People. It is pretty exciting. I am looking for folk(s) who have some time, interest and aptitude for proofreading the final text as I am way to familiar with it by now such that it is so easy to miss things. This needs a set of eyes which are good at attending to detail and finding small spelling, punctuation, font style or spacing errors (no editing is required). The issue will be 40 pages in a magazine style so it could take a while but it need not be just one person. If you are interested and able to help out within the next 10 days, please reply to this e mail. THANK YOU! REGISTER FOR THE ZOOM HERE: HTTPS://US02WEB.ZOOM.US/.../TZYTF... [1] Bank Swallows are aerial insectivores (birds that eat insects while flying). As a group, aerial insectivores are declining at a faster rate than any other bird group in Canada. This presentation will look at the life history of Bank Swallows, including habitat, migration and breeding behaviour. We will examine Bank Swallow's status in Canada and why they are at risk. Finally, we will discuss ways Birds Canada, and you, can help these birds recover. Our presenter is Heather Polowyk, the Bank Swallow Conservation Coordinator for Birds Canada in the Atlantic region. They have worked to create a Bank Swallow monitoring project to assess the population status across the region, encouraging people to know how to identify swallows and report sightings of colonies. We were excited to hear that the team at the Jijuktukwejk Watershed Alliance found bank swallow nests this year along the river. We are curious to learn more about these migratory species at risk birds in our area! Some climate actions (like the large Climate Strike in Halifax) have been cancelled today due to severe weather (however, the Ecology Action Centre is still organizing action by encouraging people to fax the government calling for climate action through the EAC website [1] - no fax machine required!). This storm threatens to be detrimental to us, but severe storms like Fiona may be detrimental to other species, like migratory birds along the shorelines and migrating butterflies. With warming temperatures and ocean waters, and increasing climate instability, Fiona is a harbinger of more to come... We need to find ways to organize for local climate action and resiliency. THAT'S WHY THE BLOMIDON NATURALISTS SOCIETY IS TRYING TO LAUNCH CLIMATE CIRCLES - AND WE NEED YOUR HELP! Our Climate Circles crowdfunding campaign [2] is now live, in partnership with the Small Change Fund. While you charge your devices and hunker down for the storm - perhaps you have a chance to read this request and learn about our Climate Circles plan? The BNS aims to relaunch Climate Circles in the winter of 2023, this time with the financial resources needed to honour the time and commitment it takes to support grassroots-level community climate action on a weekly basis for a whole region. There's global consensus that we need collective action for this unprecedented, collective problem, as well as scalable, and location-specific solutions in every community. It is also clear that we need a timeline of major action progress this decade. Sounds like we need to get meeting! We are in a climate emergency that is deepening rather than resolving, but we do have a window to act from now until around 2030. It is more important than ever that we who care about climate change are translating our care into effective action to scale up solutions in time. But any climate action arising from regular folks who care needs a foundation of community from which to act. That is, we need to be able to identify who else around us cares, as well as what interests and skills they have so that we can do climate-responsive projects together. Climate Circles aims to build these foundational communities in order to create and sustain local-level, citizen-driven climate action projects. We host facilitated, weekly action meetings in Wolfville, Nova Scotia that are intentionally structured to encourage fun, effective, positive, inclusive and supportive sessions that address the topics most relevant and motivating to those in attendance. Climate Circles is a place where people build community and see that they are not alone in their climate concerns and desire to act and learn new skills. It is somewhere they can dream up and begin work on projects that no one person could take on alone. It is a regional hub of all things climate action where everyone and anyone worried about climate change and motivated to figure out how to respond is actively welcomed. It is a place where we believe everyone has something to offer to the movement and that it is our collective job to figure out how to make space for everyone to contribute. Doing these things well requires learning new ways of being and thinking that support continued patient, generous and effective involvement. It also means identifying all the reasons people might get discouraged and stop attending meetings. It means anticipating and responding to these reasons before they take hold so meaningful, citizen-driven climate action can thrive. With this in mind, the Climate Circle facilitators are both proactive and responsive in creating a system which provides facilitative structure, just-in-time training, celebrations, fun, hands-on projects, and more to ensure that participants' needs are met as they continue to meet together to achieve the climate action outcomes that we need . BUT WE CAN?T DO IT ALONE. We need your help to support this unique, citizen-driven project so that we can foster climate change action in Nova Scotia, Canada, and the world. PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TODAY, AS AN ACT OF CLIMATE ACTION, TO SUPPORT OUR EFFORTS! PLEASE VISIT OUR CLIMATE CIRCLES [3] PAGE TO LEARN MORE, AND VISIT OUR SMALL CHANGE FUND CROWDFUNDING PAGE [2] TO MAKE A CONTRIBUTION. As we reckon with the tragic and ongoing impacts of residential school and colonization, today is a sombre day of reflection and commemoration, but also of reconciliation and action. With that, I wanted to share a Settler Education course that numerous BNS board members and members took part in back in the winter, as a way to explore Canadian colonialism and how it informs our relationship to these lands and communities, and to open up more space for inclusion and respect. It was thought-provoking, interactive, and well-received by all who participated. We participated in an abridged workshop on Settler Education, facilitated by Horizons Community Development Associates [1]. They are offering a full course this fall and again in the winter, with in-person and online options. Please take a look (details forwarded below) if you are keen on exploring a way to engage with the truth and reconciliation process.
