Message-ID: <949980f36796cbcb8dfa9a4fb22f9af1@blomidonnaturalists.ca> Good day, With the mild spring weather and the emergence of wildflowers and other nature, we have decided to have a BNS hike this weekend. Join hike leader Soren Bondrup-Nielsen on Sunday May 7th to explore spring through the hardwood and mixed forests of Cape Split. This will be a beautiful walk to see spring ephemerals and more! Meet at 10:00 am at the Cape Split trailhead in Scots Bay. The whole loop is fairly flat terrain, with some hills, but except to be out for a good part of the day. Pack a lunch, bring water, and wear good shoes. More details & registration here: https://blomidonnaturalists.ca/event/cape-split-spring-hike/ Carpools can be arranged. -- Caroline Beddoe She/her 613-619-1098 Program Coordinator Blomidon Naturalists Society Wolfville, Nova Scotia _ Blomidon Naturalists Society activities take place in Mi'kma'ki, the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq People. Another great field trip is coming up: Interpreting the Ancient Environment of Horton Bluffs. _Join leader Peter Wallace for an informative morning walk learning about rocks and fossils on Sunday May 14 at 9:00 am. Meet on Avonport Station Road (details to go out to participants). More details below and registration link here [2] & below, too._ __ Open to all ages! Come explore... This field trip to a single outcrop (although quite large) will allow the viewers extensive observations on a small period of time in the geologic past as well as some of the events that have affected the rocks and organisms after deposition. Through questions and deductive reasoning, some guidance from the field trip leader, and the personal experiences of the participants, one will be able to envision the geological history of Horton Bluff up to the modern day: a science-based trip of discovery. If BNS members were impressed with Sandra Barr's talk on the geological history of Nova Scotia here's an opportunity to view and access some of the evidence used in that talk. Geologists compose stories about ancient environments and organisms using rock and fossil evidence starting from a single outcrop to a series of outcrops with similar rocks and fossils to regional areas involving outcrops of rocks and fossils of older, similar, and younger ages. This allows geologists and paleontologists to discover changes or evolutionary trends in biologic organisms and their geographic areas over time - the bio-geological history of Earth. Location: Meet at 9:00 am at the Laurie Saulnier Memorial Trail (Map here [2]). The bridge on Bog Road to the west of the trail is closed (it is not there as it is being replaced) so anyone coming from Hantsport and west will have to take the 101 and get off at Exit 7. From there, at the stop sign with Highway 1, turn right. At the fork (Pothier Motors) keep right. Just before going under the 101 turn right onto Bog Road. When you reach the intersection with Pazant Bog Road, there is a sharp turn to the right. Go past the detour sign and continue for 2.8 km. There is a sign HWWA (Hants West Wildlife Association) and turn left to get to the parking area. What to Bring: The walk is about 2 km and goes through some areas that can be wet, so waterproof shoes or good boots should be worn. Binoculars and/or a camera are great to bring if you have them. The read circle on the map is where I found evidence for HWA. The stand depicted is largely hemlock trees. The is controversy around what to do - inject trees or leave it be. See the last issue of Beyond the Tides. In a few years it will be too late to inject trees - in a few more years, all the trees will be standing skeletons. There is no easy solution. Message-ID: <17a02672ebcbc519f375042f58e1c836@blomidonnaturalists.ca> Good day, We have two birding events on the horizon, as it is such a fun time of year to be out in the woods! Indeed, thanks to Pat Kelly for leading a walk at the Laurie Saulnier trail on this past Saturday, a lovely new trail for many and with Blackburnian, magnolia and yellow-rumped warblers, ovenbirds, an American redstart, and more! If you are keen to get outside birding and learning about birds, check out the following events: Saturday May 20 - Palmeter's Woods Birding Field Trip May 20 at 8:00 am, in Kentville with birder and trip leader Guy Stevens. Casual walk (likely 2-4 km) exploring the woods. A great way to start the day with birdsong. Open to all levels of birders. Bring your binoculars if you have them. Details & sign up here. [1] Saturday May 28 - Birding by Ear Field Course May 28 at 9:00 am, all day, Ross Creek Centre for the Arts. With James Churchill, an experienced birder who you will know from wonderful BNS talks and for his work with the Atlantic Canada Conservation Data Centre. This course will teach participants about listening to birds songs and call notes, and how to associate them with specific species of birds. The vast majority of bird species vocalize and decoding their sounds can increase our awareness of bird age, behaviour, mating status, quality, bird community diversity, and help us detect and identify new species. This one-day workshop is geared towards building "earbirding" skills through better understanding of sound, describing and categorizing bird songs and learning tips and tricks that will help you solve vocal mysteries in your backyard or on any of your birding adventures. The workshop will involve a combination of class work and field work in the hardwood and mixed wood forest on the North Mountain on the Ross Creek trails to apply skills. This workshop is aimed at those with a beginner or intermediate level of earbirding experience desiring to develop or further their skills. A great way to level-up your birding skills! This is happening in conjunction with the fabulous _Celebration of Nature_ events all weekend. We are celebrating with many local hikes (as previously circulated: Jim Wolford Memorial Hike on Saturday May 27 and a Kingsport Beach Walk on Sunday May 28, details here [2]) and this wonderful day-long birding course! Join us outside! Registration and details here. Hi everyone, It?s been a long time since I?ve reached out to most of you. When the Maritimes Butterfly Atlas wrapped up in 2015, it was always my hope to publish the results in a book. That hope will become reality October 15, when Butterflies of Maine and the Canadian Maritime Provinces becomes available! This book is the culmination of the Maritimes Butterfly Atlas and the Maine Butterfly Survey. It provides detailed accounts of the 120 butterfly species known from this region, including the 92 from the Maritimes, as well as chapters on butterfly conservation, the history of butterfly study in the region, and methods used to compile data for the book, particularly the two community scientist projects. The book is available for pre-order from independent bookstores, Cornell University Press, Indigo, and Amazon, and you can see the book on the Cornell website: https://www.cornellpress.cornell.edu/book/9781501768941/butterflies-of-maine-and-the-canadian-maritime-provinces/#bookTabs=1 Please spread the word to anyone who might be interested! We are looking for keen participants to delve into this two-day forest experience! This is a fantastic learning experience at no cost except lunch! More details below:_ Appreciating the Acadian Forest: Two-Day Ecology & Connection Field Course This is a full weekend pilot course (no overnight) on the Acadian Forest with Soren Bondrup-Nielsen Saturday June 3 10:00 am - 4:00 pm and Sunday June 4th 10:00 am to 4:00 pm Ross Creek Centre for the Arts (and potentially elsewhere nearby - carpooling to be arranged) The Acadian Forest Ecology course has been developed for the BNS by Riley Scanlan and Soren Bondrup-Nielsen. We are piloting the course on June 3 and 4 to determine how well it works in terms of content, length and location (Ross Creek Centre for the Arts). Since it is a pilot run, there will not be a charge for the course itself. Ross Creek is providing space and lunch for the two days and there will be charge for lunch at $35 per person for the two day. Details & registration here. [1] _More details pending regarding travel beyond Ross Creek. Please see the information below & the attached course outline for details. _ _--_ Details: Appreciating the Acadian Forest _A two-day course consisting of five modules about the Acadian Forest, __presented by: Blomidon Naturalists Society_ _Delivered by: Soren Bondrup-Nielsen_ The Acadian Forest covers most of Nova Scotia and consisted of more than fifty percent old growth before Europeans arrived. From that time, it has been extensively altered by clearing for agriculture, urban development and forestry. Extensive clear-cutting practices continue, and the forest is now also impacted by extreme weather events due to climate change and invasive species such as hemlock woolly adelgid, the emerald ash borer, and beech leaf miner. With these impacts it is important to gain an appreciation of this forest. Traditionally, a course about nature, such as forests and other ecosystems, tends to focus on how to recognize and classify them, the species that they contain and what function they serve. As for the species, often just the ones important from a human perspective are mentioned. We live at a time of great environmental impact from humans. For people to really appreciate nature, it is not enough to have an academic and ecological understanding alone, but we must also impart an emotional connection, which we feel will engender a need to protect nature. Humans are part of nature, and nature is what sustains us. Thus, this course intends to engender a holistic view of the Acadian Forest and aims to bring about an emotional, as well as an ecological appreciation of the Acadian Forest, which we feel will engender a need to protect this highly complex and fragile ecosystem. Module 1: Appreciating the forest Module 2: Forest Species Module 3: Reading the forest Module 4: Forest types and ecology Module 5: Humans and the forest This course will have mostly field work and some readings, discussion and activities. See the attached course outline for more details. This course will take place predominantly outside in the forest and trails. Participants should be willing to walk outdoors in a variety of terrains. Please contact us with any accessibility questions or other questions. Message-ID: <0662eb58eb0c7ef0ede94d4ba1fd42b7@blomidonnaturalists.ca> Good day, We have another fun course coming up at Ross Creek Centre for the Arts! Last Sunday, James Churchill taught a wonderful birding by ear course at Ross Creek (see some snapshots below), and we are delighted to be hosting more courses here this year, including Soren's pilot course on the Acadian Forest [1] this weekend, this upcoming wildflower course, a lichen course on October 15th and a mushroom course on October 28th (details coming later). Wildflowers & Other Plants of the Acadian Forest Once again we have this fun course with Alain Belliveau! Come learn about and to identify different plant families and species in our local area, and to gain foundational knowledge for interpreting and connecting to the Acadian Forest region. The focus is on widlflowers, but will touch on ferns and other things like sedges, grasses and reeds. Sunday June 11th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. This is an all-day classroom & field course on how to identify wildflowers and other plants conducted by Alain Belliveau, local botanist and the Biodiversity Collections Manager at the E C Smith Herbarium at Acadia University. The course will take place at the Ross Creek Centre for the Arts. Lunch is provided as part of the ticket. We are working with our events leaders and partners to determine next steps, so more details will emerge, but please note that this means that all we will need to plan to postpone until further notice all BNS events in forests, including our upcoming field courses. Notice will go out to participants already registered. We will keep an eye on what is happening and make any further updates as required. This is a devastating time and we hope everyone is safe and that the rains come soon. Our hearts break at the loss happening to homes, wildlife, habitat, and places across this beautiful province. This has been such as dry spring, and as we experience the challenges and devastation of drought, and the unpredictable weather of climate change, we know that naturalists societies and our work to care for the natural environment, promote resilience and adaptation, and support sustainable futures is so pertinent. Stay safe, Caroline -- Caroline Beddoe She/her 613-619-1098 Program Coordinator Blomidon Naturalists Society Wolfville, Nova Scotia _ Blomidon Naturalists Society activities take place in Mi'kma'ki, the traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi'kmaq People.
