As you may know, Caroline started a master's degree in planning at Dalhousie this fall. She is greatly missed but we have hired a new student, Spencer Laing, to take up the co-ordinator role; he starts October 9, just around the corner. We are looking forward to an exciting fall with various presentations, field trips, and courses. Also, those of you who are paid members of the BNS will have received an email through our new membership portal where you can access your membership status, edit your address and renew your membership. Membership renewal will be 1 December and you will e receiving a reminder. Payment can be made by credit card directly through the portal or you may choose to pay by check or e-transfer. Keeping track of members the old way was rather tedious and often led to problems. We hope that with this new tool it will become less cumbersome and up to date. We hope you have a wonderful fall. ? As of Fall 2023, $12.5 million from the CAAF is now available to support projects that will develop knowledge, tools and/or skills and increase the environmental literacy of young Canadians as part of the long-term solutions to tackle climate change. The target audience is children (ages 0-5), K-12 (c?gep in Quebec) students, their families and/or educators. Of this funding, $2.5 million is dedicated to fund Indigenous-led initiatives that can build capacity to deal with the triple threat of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. In order to be eligible for funding, projects must align with one of the following four priorities: * greening learning spaces * developing learning materials and opportunities * integrating environmental education into teacher training and educator professional development * improving research on environmental literacy and its impacts To maximize the investment, Environment and Climate Change Canada is partnering with several philanthropic organizations who will contribute funding to increase the scope and impact of this investment. Please note the applicant eligibility requirements for this funding opportunity. Applicants must be not-for-profit, including: ? Non-governmental organizations (including registered charities, environmental community groups, etc.) ? Universities or academic institutions ? Indigenous organizations For this funding, all non-Indigenous applicants must have an applicable organization identification number from the List of charities and certain other qualified donees. Indigenous organizations (i.e., national, provincial, territorial Indigenous organization, Tribal councils, and Indigenous communities) must provide an organization identification number such as a First Nations Band Number or Registered Charity Number. In addition to the eligibility requirements, applying organizations must meet one or more of the following criteria: ? have a core mandate to develop content and/or programs in environmental education or literacy ? have a proven ability to reach target audiences (children (ages 0-5), K-12 students, their families and/or educators) ? work with or are from under-served communities (e.g., Indigenous, visible minorities & diversity groups) ? have the ability to measure success through indicators, data, results and/or experimentation approaches Visit the environmental literacy funding applicant guide on the CAAF website for detailed information on eligibility, application requirements, fund objective and priorities, and how to apply for funding. The deadline for submitting an application under the Environmental literacy funding Expression of Interest is 3:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time (EDT), on October 31, 2023. Log into the online application platform Grants & Contributions Enterprise Management System (GCEMS) to apply. As I spoke to here (below) is our upcoming sustainable development event that some of our members might be interested in. Please reach out if there are questions, people can register through the QR code. If you could please share this with the membership. Kind regards, ~Kent Thriving Futures 2023 Thriving Futures 2023 is a sustainable development project happening at Dalhousie University in partnership with Halifax Public Libraries, focusing on co-creating resilientcommunities to embrace thriving futures. Our Thriving Futures 2023 Halifax Central Library event invites community members into meaningful conversations that explore seeds and scenarios to enable thriving futures through sustainable development frameworks (e.g., United Nation?s Sustainable Development Goals). How do we embrace challenges, like good health and well-being, housing, severe weather events, loss of green spaces in our communities, etc. During our time together we will use dialogue, the arts, and nourishing food and refreshments to co-inspire pathways for action. ?We hereby invite our Dalhousie and interconnected communities to engage in conversations that matter in the Thriving Futures 2023 event on Oct. 20-21 at the Halifax Central Library.? Time & Location Friday 20th October 2023 from 9am ? 4pm ADT Saturday 21st October 2023 from 9am ? 1:30pm ADT Halifax, 5440 Spring Garden Rd., Halifax, NS B3J 1E9, Canada. More about the event: In September 2015, near all countries of the world adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda to respond to the global growing inequalities, climate emergency and nature in crisis, that is leaving the Earth and all life on the planet susceptible to looming doom, with a projected climatic disaster if no action is taken. Considering, this call to action has been woven into local and global strategies at both the micro and macro levels. Universities are playing a critical role in contributing to the Sustainable Development (SD) by bridging the knowledge gaps and achieving the SDGs through research, education, practice, and community engagement. About our study: Through a mixed method case study approach, a team of researchers look to explore the question, ?How do we deeply engage DAL community voices and span boundaries within Halifax to interact, co-create, and co-inspire actions towards climate action and sustainable development by (re)imagining desired futures?? We will employ research methods integrating a combination of surveys, expressive arts, and focus group discussions. Conversations will respond to: W ho and where are we as a community in our sustainability thinking and practice?? H ow do we inclusively engage community members in this desired future process??? H ow can we interweave non-western alternative knowledge frameworks with scientific knowledge frameworks to enable new ways of thinking for climate change action??? H ow do we let go of old stories that bind us and create openness to new possibilities?? H ow can community members and institutions of power commit to achieving outlined desired futures? We look forward to your participation??day participation is welcomed! Kent A.
