From burka at upei.ca Sat Mar 9 13:58:51 2024 From: burka at upei.ca (John Burka) Date: Sat, 9 Mar 2024 15:58:51 -0400 Subject: [BNS_members] Fwd: [NNS Board] Worth circulating again with March 31st on the way In-Reply-To: References: <9f16e025-6e64-4a26-88c1-6b27a6e0301a@eastlink.ca> Message-ID: As you are aware, the BNS is one of the members of the umbrella organization Nature NS which covers many nature and conservation organizations in Nova Scotia. By working together we have been able to do projects that encompass the entire province. In addition, NNS carries out considerable advocacy, participating in letter writing campaigns as well as legal cases. I, as secretary of the BNS, sit on the NNS Board. In my opinion, the interaction between BNS and NNS is productive. Indeed, the BNS is hosting the NNS Celebration of Nature and AGM this year in conjunction with the 50th Anniversary of BNS. Together BNS and NNS have been protecting nature, making more people aware of nature and Nova Scotia a better place to live. Nature NS relies heavily on modest dues from the member organizations and grants and donations. The Echo Foundation is a major source of funding, but relies on matching funds. If 4,205 NNS supporters donate $20 or more over the fiscal year April 1,2023 - March 31, 2024, Echo will grant NNS $100,000. Or a portion thereof. With three weeks left in the fiscal year we have a total ~200 donors which allows NNS to receive $4,750. Each of the member organizations is making a concerted effort to increase the individual donations to approach the maximum grant of $100,000. We have a long way to go. I am thus asking BNS members to consider donating $20 or more to NNS by March 31st so that we can continue the great work we are already doing. We basically need a larger matching grant to maintain the sorely-needed staff to work with our volunteers. The following link should take you to the donation page on the NNS website and give to the Echo Foundation Challenge. * https://naturens.ca/actions/donate/ * Thank you for helping support Nature NS ... and also sign up for the Celebration of Nature which will be held in Kentville, May 23-25. Dear Bob and all: I am sorry to hear that not as many donations have been received as we?d hoped. With each of us needing to make only a ~ $ 20.00 donation to achieve our target, it seems achievable. I suspect most folks are busy and simply forgot to click on the donate button. (*This happens to me all the time! Having recognized that, I donated right away when the message was first sent. I presume the funds landed in the right cookie jar on the other end* .) It is worthwhile to provide the donation link again. I couldn?t find it in our emails, so I created a link below that should work. On the Nature NS web page, it doesn?t matter which ?donate button? we click it directs to the Echo fund. Good work by Jess and Becky! Donate Hopefully our various leads can circulate this again. ?Shake those trees? (so to speak)- you know how I always work trees into the dialogue. I see Bev is already on it! Oh, and folks who are free tonight should come to the SOOF old fashioned dance in Round Hill! Maybe see you there. Talk to everyone tomorrow! I've just posted the fundraising campaign info on the Annapolis group again. Also donated a bit more myself. It's on the donor website and been circulated several times; an offer by the Echo Foundation: If 4,205 NNS supporters donate $20 or more over the fiscal year April 1, 2023 - March 31, 2024, Echo will grant NNS $100,000. Or a portion thereof. With three weeks left in that fiscal year, we have a total ~200 donors. Instead of $100,000 NNS, is slated to receive $4,750. Echo offered this amount as a means to get more sorely-needed staff to work with volunteers. Did you make your group aware of this offer? Should the NNS letterhead subtitle say "representing more than 200 citizens"? This current budget trajectory will eventually reduce NNS to a state of no employees and general ineffectiveness in dealing with human-caused nature losses. Insufficient financial support and an inadequate number of volunteers amounts to a frustrating end game. Please bring your thoughts to the board meeting tomorrow.
