This morning I walked back of my place, through what’s left of Sutton woods to the back yard of a house on Highway 358, not far from the end of<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span><st1:street w:st="on"><st1:address w:st="on">Sutton Road</st1:address></st1:street>. (I’ve been there before to look for winter birds.). The yard is a tangle of cedars and other trees and shrubs, especially since recent storms have blown some things over. About 20 black-capped chickadees and a few white-throated sparrows were darting in and out of a cedar, giving alarm calls, so I knew there must be a predator somewhere. I poked around and pretty soon found myself nose to beak with a sleepy-eyed little saw-whet owl, the first one I’ve actually found “in the wild”, as opposed to mist nets or cages. How about that, eh?
