Invest in Our Future

Building an endowment fund is the best way to ensure the long-term financial stability for the Blomidon Naturalists Society.

The BNS has been providing quality environmental programming and education to the Annapolis Valley region for more than 50 years. As one of the largest naturalist organizations in Nova Scotia, we have become a pillar of the community and a strong voice for nature. Our current work is funded by memberships, special events, project grants, and donations from our generous supporters, but funding opportunities are highly variable. Regular income from an endowment fund provides a sustainable financial base so that we can continue to:

• provide a wide range of nature-based experiences for kids, youth and adults.
• offer our popular education programs and sustainably fund our part-time coordinator
• be an independent and active voice for nature and conservation in the region.

This sustainable core funding source enables us to maintain our efforts to connect, educate and advocate for nature and sustainability in the region.

How Does it Work?
Your donation goes to building the capital in the endowment fund which we have invested through a licensed financial advisor based on green, ethical investment criteria. The capital is untouched over the long term and the yearly interest from this fund is used as a core element of the yearly operating budget, allowing us to do more and spend less time fund-raising. The Endowment Fund is overseen by the Treasurer and the BNS Endowment Committee, who in turn report to the Board of Directors.

“A gift to the endowment keeps on giving.”

Making a Donation

The priority for the Endowment Fund is for larger donations (over $500) as they are gifts that keep on giving and build our long-term strength rather than contributing to a given year. Smaller donations are essential to our yearly activities. You receive a tax deduction receipt for any type of donation.

There are many ways to donate to the endowment fund…

  • You may donate online here off a credit card or by e transfer to treasurer@blomidonnaturalists.ca.
  • You also may donate stocks, bonds and mutual fonds, providing an added capital gains tax benefit.
  • Other options for tax savings include donating life insurance and RRSP/RIF funds.
  • Bequests are welcomed, please contact us to discuss this option.

Additional details on these options are provided here and we encourage you to reach out directly to the President, Treasurer, Past President, the Coordinator, or to a board member to discuss your priorities and questions.

Thank you for considering the Endowment Fund and helping us to support nature and build a sustainable future for the organization the community and the region.
