Bioblitz: City Nature Challenge
30 April-- 8:00 am - 3 May-- 5:00 pm
The call has gone out – “Help put the Maritimes on the global nature scene!” Between April 30th to May 3rd, 2021 cities/places from across the planet, from here in our provinces to other locations around the world, will compete for the title of the most Biodiverse City. We need your help. Whether you’re an avid naturalist or a dog walker, everyone can participate: it’s easy, fun, and will encourage you to get outdoors.
Any observations taken in the Annapolis or Kings Counties between April 30th and May 2nd will be counted in the challenge!
To participate, simply download the iNaturalist app to your phone or go to iNaturalist.ca
To upload observations, you can either take photos through the app or from a camera and upload them to the website later on. Click here for more information on creating observations.
Do not overlook common species from disturbed areas – how many exist in the local area? (colts-foot, dandelion, clover, daisy, golden-rod, Japanese knotweed, creeping Charlie, chickweed, horsetails, ferns, strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, cinquefoils, roses, sorrel, burdock, thistle, …). How many species of trees can be found?
How many critters can be found in backyards and in the garden? Any slugs, centipedes, snails, pill bugs, beetles, spiders, …? any signs (tracks or scat) of larger animals?
How many birds can be recorded either with photos or sound recordings?
Any amphibians? All observations are incredibly important!
