Nature Talk – Managing Hemlock Woolly Adelgid in Nova Scotia: Biocontrol Strategies, Ecological Risks, and Future Directions

Come and find out from presenter Dr. N. Kirk Hillier what the ongoing and planned efforts are in terms of the development and implementation of biological control as a long-term management strategy for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA), which poses a severe threat to our Hemlock-dominated Wabanaki forests.

Current research at Acadia University and partner institutions evaluates the efficacy, host specificity, and
climatic suitability of non-native predators (Laricobius nigrinus, L. osakensis,
Leucotaraxis spp.), supported by MSc and undergraduate projects on predator
phenology, non-target effects, and ecosystem resilience. Planned releases in will deploy
and monitor thousands of biocontrol agents across test sites in Nova Scotia. In
addition, we are engaged in complimentary studies to assess the risk of insecticidal
treatments and hemlock forest loss with focus on key indicator species such as
pollinators, birds, and amphibians.

By integrating biocontrol with ecological monitoring and stakeholder engagement, this
work aims to establish a safe, effective, and scalable strategy to slow HWA spread,
preserve forest health, and safeguard the ecological integrity of hemlock ecosystems in
Atlantic Canada.

Dr. Kirk Hillier is a Professor in Biology at Acadia University. His research focuses on insect olfactory processing and the relationship between odours and insect behaviour.
