Hi everyone,

Happy April! I hope you have had a good beginning of Spring. It is hard not to feel hopeful and excited for the welcome warm weather. Have you been able to spend much time outdoors?

I sense I am not the only one who tapped trees and made syrup this past month. This was my first attempt and it was very fun. Though I was only able to tap trees during a cold spout, so did not yield much!
As I'm sure those of you who have boiled sap for hours understand, I have a new appreciation for the delicious pancake topping. It was a great exercise that invited me to think more deeply about the products I consume without much thought. I ask myself, where did this salt come from? What kind of tree did this paper originate from? When we pause for these thoughts, we see products as more than items meant to serve us, but as minerals and plants that were once a part of the environment around us. This has been a large part of my journey to connect with nature, even from inside my apartment.

What is something you use everyday that you don't know how it's made or where it comes from?

We also have a number of awesome events this month that will get you thinking about the environment around you. The Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative will join us for our monthly meeting. In addition we have the Early Valley Birding and Highway Cleanup field trips coming up this April! More details and registration links are below.

Happy trails,
Riley

** GET INVOLVED
------------------------------------------------------------
Hemlock Woolly Adelgid Surveys
In March, Soren led a field trip to teach people how to survey for Hemlock Woolly Adelgid. The goal is to monitor the eastern Annapolis Valley for the invasive species so we know where it is when it arrives. There is information about this is on the website here. (https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=2a331ec680&e=b24cf58224) Contact Soren (mailto:soren at bondrup.com) if you'd like to get involved.
No Mow May
Consider using your land to create a Naturalist's Garden. That is, one which promotes diversity, naturalized species and creates habitat and food sources for our local insects! Here is a good article (https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=efc80c4ca0&e=b24cf58224) on the topic.
We are planning to run a few activities to promote biodiversity in gardens throughout the spring and summer months. Watch your emails and our Facebook page for updates in the coming weeks.
Nature Day of Action
Nature Canada is the parent, federal organization to BNS and to many nature groups across the country. On April 9th, they are asking people to contact the Finance Minister to send the message: "the upcoming budget needs to make room for nature".
Here is a resource (https://blomidonnaturalists.us7.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0dbe0d10c2ef002331c94c4f9&id=a52607369b&e=b24cf58224) to help make the phone call.

** IN THE NEWS

A North Atlantic right whale mother and calf in waters near Cumberland Island, Georgia, in March.
"North Atlantic right whales gave birth over the winter in greater numbers than scientists have seen since 2015, an encouraging sign for researchers who became alarmed three years ago when the critically endangered species produced no known offspring at all." This blog post on the Audubon Society's website depicts a researcher's experience aboard an offshore vessel for weeks at a time. A surprise visitor, a Scarlet Tanager, provided the team lots of joy and lessons that we, in the midst of a pandemic, can certainly appreciate.
