Hi All

Thank you all for a great back and forth discussion and the ideas are headed to the list. On the distinction in Mi’k maw terms, I had done a bit of research on this in consultation with folks from Glooscap First Nation. Netukulimk and Etuaptmumk are two distinct though related concepts to the best of my understanding which I have written about here describing the philosophy behind our design of earth advnture trails for families: https://earthadventures.ca/how-it-all-works/ <https://earthadventures.ca/how-it-all-works/> (you need to scroll down half the page to find the relevant info).

One thing to pause on if we were to go with a Mi’k maw term is our ability to live by the title in practice of the content and process of the magazine and contributions from the Mi’kmaw community. That is a very interesting and challenging thought. The land acknowledgement idea gets at this but this is all going to be a great discussion to come up with a final suggestion.

Cheers

Alan

An addition to the below - The explanation of the word would also include an explanation as to why BNS was naming its newsletter with a Mi’kmaq word. Also, the addition of the Mi’kmaq word would distinguish it from that other journal called “Nature” 🙂!

Responding to Celes’s ask:

               Nature—Netukulimk
The Blomidon Naturalists Society’s Periodical

I am no expert in the Mi’kmaq language but I. googled and found this word “Netukulimk”. According to one site, it is Mi'kmaq, for a spiritual understanding of the natural world. If something like this is desirable, we would have to check with someone who has first-hand knowledge of the language. There would then have to be an explanation of what the word means - perhaps on the inside cover.

I like that this suggestion goes broader than “Naturalist”. I think it offers inclusiveness and access to a broader group of people to learn about the environment…

I am comfortable with Blomidon Environment Society. But wonder how we might be inclusive of Two-Eyed Seeing perspectives about the natural world, as a step towards reconciliation between settler conservationists and indigenous wisdom as a nature-based, conservation focused, and contemporary organization…

Thank you for this conversation.

Hi All

I am really excited to be the new editor and kick off the naming contest for the Blomidon Naturalists nature/environmental publication to be produced twice a year. But what to call it? it is going to be an informative, engaging and stimulating publication with lots of colour perspectives and reach. Please pitch me some suggestions and the winner gets a free BNS wildflower or Fungi workshop!!! Time is short, the deadline for suggestions if Friday, May 20.

AND, if anyone has an idea for an article or contribution to the new publication, or wants to write something, please reach out to me and let's chat.

Cheers
