Just a comment about using Jijuktu'kwejk as the new publication's name.
Check out the Facebook page, The Jijuktu'kwejk Project (re: renaming the river) for reasons why this choice isn't appropriate for the new publication.
Also, the Jijuktu'kwejk Watershed Alliance (once known as Friends of the Cornwallis) is using that nomenclature and their may be confusion about the new BNS publication.
Jijuktu'kwejk means "the narrowing river", basically the point at Port Williams where the river, indeed, narrows. Mi'kmaw is a verb-based language and so different parts of the river have different names. Check out the Mi'kmaw Place Names Digital Atlas, where you can find a variety of designations for various parts of the river. It is not to say the river can't be named that but it would be inappropriate.
This is a much larger discussion that I won't trouble you with in this thread, but suffice it to say, Jijuktu'kwejk isn't the final word on the colonial name of the river currently named after Halifax's founder.
Again, I would suggest you go to the Fb page, The Jijuktu'kwejk Project, and scroll through the posts to find out what is going on with the name, the council at Annapolis Valley First Nation, and then consider the name of the publication.
Or, if you want to speak with an elder there, Chief Gerald Toney Jr would be a good contact.
I hope this is useful information for your deliberations on a choice of a name for the new BNS publication.

Hi Melissa: I think we should run this by Mi'kmaq elders, as some others suggested. Using the Mi'kmaq name of the river, hopefully is not cultural appropriation as there is a push to have the river renamed Jijuktu'kwejk already ... certainly much better than Cornwallis!

I share Garry’s concerns about cultural appropriation if we use a Mi’kmaq word in the title. This is not a Mi’kmaq journal and, other than a shared interest in the natural world, I don’t see a connection to the Mi’kmaq community.

I've been following the discussion with great interest. I really like The Jijuktu’kwjek Journal that has been suggested along with a description of what it means and the ceded territory statement as someone earlier suggested.
However, there is a fine line between being supportive of a culture and appropriating it. In order to use a name like this it would be vary important to consult with the appropriate Mi’Kmaq and maybe even discuss some type of collaboration.
If using that name isn't appropriate then I'd suggest "The Blomidon Naturalist Journal" it's simple, easy to remember and clearly describes what it is and then perhaps, as someone suggested, a Mi'Kmaq translation below or on the inside page.
All the best.

Hi Everyone,
I didn’t expect to comment on this. But I have found the Reply All discussion to date very inspiring and positive and this was also my reaction to the video of the April meeting presentation by Keeler and Jonas.
I would like to suggest The Jijuktu’kwjek Journal. This would be a direct reference to the original culture on this land when it was far more “natural” than it is today. The Jijuktu’kwjek River passes through much of the area served by the BNS.
It might be good to have The Geegeewoktok Journal in a different, smaller font underneath the primary name. We could all use a regular reminder on the pronunciation.

Rick Whitman

Hi All
I am really excited to be the new editor and kick off the naming contest for the Blomidon Naturalists nature/environmental publication to be produced twice a year. But what to call it? it is going to be an informative, engaging and stimulating publication with lots of colour perspectives and reach. Please pitch me some suggestions and the winner gets a free BNS wildflower or Fungi workshop!!! Time is short, the deadline for suggestions if Friday, May 20.
AND, if anyone has an idea for an article or contribution to the new publication, or wants to write something, please reach out to me and let's chat.
Cheers
Alan Warner
