Join us at 7pm for a social time with food and drink before the presentation begins at 7:30pm. As always, the presentation will be streamed live over Zoom. You can register via the link below.

The presentation will briefly look at the history and evolution of the NS Protected Area System with an emphasis on how the purposes of protected areas have changed over time. The talk will also highlight the important role the public and non-government organizations have played in the development of the current system. Some thoughts will be offered on the pathway to achieve the legislated 20% protection target followed by questions, thoughts, and discussion from meeting participants.

John LeDuc is a Conservation Planner residing in Annapolis County, Nova Scotia who worked for more than 30 years for the Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forests and then the Department of the Environment, from which he retired in 2009. As an undergraduate at Acadia University, he led a campaign to protect the Cape Split-Cape Blomidon Peninsula. During the 1990’s John’s priority focus was on the Park and Protected Area System Plan which lead to the protection of 31 wilderness areas and the passing of the Wilderness Areas Protection Act. John became the Manager and head of the Protected Areas Branch for the Department of Environment in 2001 where he oversaw the addition of new wilderness areas. John is a strong supporter of Private Land Conservation and worked to establish agreements between the province and private land trusts. He continues to volunteer and work in this area. A career highlight for John was the participation on the team that crafted the Environmental Goals and Sustainable Prosperity Act and enshrined in legislation the goal of protecting at least 12 % of the provinces landscape
